Blogging and Monetization

If I was to monetize Rated E, I think I would choose primarily advertisement and corporate sponsorship. I would also leave the option to donate via Paypal because it couldn’t hurt anything. (If possible, and if I was really gaining a significant fanbase, I would perhaps sell merchandise but that isn’t likely to happen with opinionated/review blogs.)

Because my blog is based on the opinions and reviews of movies and TV shows, it would be easiest and most beneficial to do advertisement. It’s the perfect type of blog for advertising because it targets a very specific audience that has a significant amount of people; advertisers who would feature on my blog would be upcoming films and perhaps films that don’t get enough advertisement on TV or in theaters. Perhaps straight to DVD films could feature their advertisements. New upcoming shows that aren’t projected to have high ratings for their premiere could advertise and perhaps boost their numbers. The same can be said for corporate sponsorship except it would be more genuine and would not in any way take away from how followers may think of my blog. Services like Netflix could perhaps give me a discounted membership. Film companies could send “indie” movies to me and I would watch them and review with my honest opinion.

Both of these options would be perfect for my blog and it wouldn’t take away credibility or the integrity of my blog because my blog is very easy-going and there is no formula. I watch whatever interests me and I state my honest opinion. Occasionally, I’ll watch something that others recommend or something that catches my attention but there is nothing that I wouldn’t necessarily watch except for things in the horror/gore category. I would even watch thrillers. Readers of my blog wouldn’t suddenly feel cheated or annoyed by the advertisements and sponsorships because they would be relevant. I don’t think anyone would think of it as “selling out” or anything like that.

Monetizing My Personal Blog

If I could choose any way to monetize my personal blog, Collegiate Veggie, I would choose corporate sponsorships and partnerships. Because I have a food blog, this would be the easiest way to make money off of my blog because different companies could sponsor each post. I wouldn’t have to worry about downloads or clicks or selling a product. I could just keep on cooking like I normally do, but get paid to use certain ingredients, or possibly certain utensils. I’ve seen a lot of food bloggers do this already and I like how they still have the creativity and freedom to make whatever food I want, while still getting paid to do it.

Also, we these partnerships, chances are that the companies are much larger, more well-known brands and products. This would be very beneficial to my readers as they wouldn’t have to search far and wide for these products, but could actually find them just about anywhere. One of my favorite bloggers, Minimalist Baker, recently posted a recipe for Creamy Vegan Garlic Pasta with Roasted Tomatoes that was actually sponsored by Blue Diamond Almond Milk. I have already made this recipe multiple times and absolutely love it. And the best part is that I always have almond or coconut milk in my fridge and the rest of the ingredients are so simple that I can throw this recipe together last minute.

Blogging Network

I think if I wanted to make a career out of TVB and movie reviews I would but it’s more of a hobby. If I wasn’t in college and I watched more television/movies, I would definitely join a network but as my blog is right now, I wouldn’t. I think a network focusing on entertainment can be tricky however. Most people, if they have their own blogs, are going to be writing about multiple shows so it would be hard showcasing any one blog. I think a blogging network for entertainment would have to be extensive; it would have to be broken up between genres and it would have to highlight at least three posts/bloggers within each genre. They would need to have a “hot topics” section and a “popular” section, the former for trending topics (ex. post about the teen wolf finale) and the latter for top shows (ex. general game of thrones post)

Because there are so many aspects of TV- writing, directing, filming, effects, characters, romantic relationships, platonic relationships, plot, etc- it would be hard choosing who could and couldn’t be featured on the network. Especially since they would most likely be competition. there would most likely be arguments instead of help. On Popsugar for example, those are mothers or people  networking and getting tips from each other. That’s the kind of website that promotes help. A network about opinions would not be the same because you don’t need anyone else’s opinion. You already have yours and it would definitely be a source of conflict. Of course, this could work to your advantage if a fellow blogger doesn’t mind having friendly competition with your differing opinions, sort of like an established rivalry; you could drive traffic to each other’s blogs.

I think a network could work but it would definitely have to be well thought out. There are so many television shows and so many differing opinions- and opinions within opinions- that it would be hard to categorize. I think it would have to be very basic where the network “hired” writers to write their articles/reviews and the bloggers would just have a link back to their original website/blog.

Thoughts on Blogging Networks

As a personal decision, I think I would not mind being part of a blogging network. The positives that are associated with being part of a blogging network seem to really appealing, especially since I am such a new blogger in the blogosphere. I think that by being part of a blogging network, not only will I be able to get myself out there, but I would also be able to learn from the other blogs found on the same blogging network as me.

Since getting hits and being followed is the goal for any blog, being associated with such a blogging network platform makes it easier to get my name across. The only thing is, I would rather be part of a blogging network that would link to my own blog and even highlight some of my other personal posts. That way, if a person comes to read a blog on the blogging network, mine can be read too. I understand that there are other blogs that should also be highlighted, and that is totally fine. I would not mind have a rotational highlighting of different blogs. That way everyone gets chance. Having a blogging network that only highlights the same blogs over and over is not one that I would want to be a part of.

While the examples of blog networks we looked at seemed pretty comprehensive, I did not find that either of them would be able to support my own blog. I really like talking about books and movies, things in the entertainment. Or at least, those are some of the things that I really like talking about. Therefore, a type of blog network that I could see myself contributing to would be one that deals with literature and movies. Like I mentioned in the above paragraph, I would like the blog network that I am part of highlight my posts every now and then. By being highlighted by the blog network, I can get some validation to what I’m writing. That is because the sure fire way to get validation on anything is to know that people are reading and listening to what you are saying.

The way this type of blog network would be helpful is that other people can find a sense of community that they may not have in real life. The people that blog will be able to help others make their blogs better because these people will read other blogs. If they see something that they like in a blog and see that it was highlighted for the week, then that would make another blogger try to emulate it in some way to ensure that theirs will also be highlighted eventually. Not only that, but since there is usually some type of contact information associated with the bloggers on the blog network, bloggers can get in touch with each other and even promote each other on their own private blog posts that are not on the blog network.

What is Social Media

I’ve never actually taken the time to think of how I define Social Media. I sort of just think of a bunch of websites; Tumblr, Facebook, Instagram, and Myspace. I usually just think of any websites that encourage socializing between individuals or groups of people.

When I looked up the definition for “Media” it is stated that it is any means of communication to the masses.

Going off of this definition, I would say that the internet as a whole is social media instead of the few websites that I listed above. I

would define social media as anything that allows mass amounts of people to interact and socialize with each other. Social media should have the ability to reach thousands of people across the world.

Facebook and Myspace are good examples. A person can meet old friends but they can also access all kinds of other people in the world. Depending on the privacy settings, anyone can be updated to someone’s life. Obviously the everyday person’s updates aren’t going to be in high demand but this can be seen on popular artists/entertainers’ Facebook pages. Demi Lovato’s page would update about her concerts, her album news, and news about X-factor and it may link to other related artists or pages. In this way, different groups are getting relevant information about a multitude of things. On a personal level, it is still possible to reach a high number of people even without the public status update. In messages, a user can send a message to anyone they tag. That means though it is private, it can still reach more than a few people. Myspace is somewhat the same, or at least it used to be. I’m not sure what it’s like now but I know a lot of up and coming people still use it for their respective careers. I think it has become a website used for networking and collaborating. A lot of artists showcase their new songs on their pages/profiles though they may be unknown. They use the website with the hopes that their name will reach potential fans/customers.

Perhaps the best examples (that I know of) are Twitter and Tumblr. While Facebook and Myspace are primarily used for friends or people who already have some sort of established relationship, Twitter and Tumblr builds relationships between strangers. It’s almost odd that Twitter uses the least amount of words but it is probably the number 1 “Social media” website. Strangers update about trivial things but they can also share pictures, music, links, practically anything with their followers. Information is spread so incredibly fast through Twitter. Tumblr is actually pretty fast as well but it doesn’t seem as widespread with regard to users. But what it lacks in popularity, it makes up with full body texts and more in-depth information.

Basically, social media is anything that allows communication and the spreading of information between thousands, even millions of people. I think that while a blog can potentially spread information, it depends on the interface and the way the blog is used and set up. It has the potential to be social media but I wouldn’t necessarily call all blogs social media. I only say this because not every blog opens up  room for conversation and communication. If it’s a one-way flow of information, I don’t think it counts. It definitely fits the definition of “media” but to be considered “Social media” I think blogs would need more mutual interaction.

Replay Web

 

22-BITS-popupIn her article, Jenna Wortham discusses the phenomenon of  “replay web”.  There is no set definition of replay Web, but Wortham describes it as the manner in which the internet is able to replay events/moments that have occurred at different times and with different significance and sometimes even with commentary. Replay Web allows people to relive moments and share their opinions and commentary with everyone else.  Social networks such as Twitter and Facebook along with blog sites such as Tumblr are the perfect go-to example when speaking about replay Web.  Whenever a big story breaks, you can definitely expect it to be covered on every one of those sites with different opinions and meanings to each user.

Throughout Twitter and Tumblr you will immediately find witty tweets, pictures, and memes of any big event that has occurred despite the time period it happened. A huge favorite of the replay Web has to be everyone’s obsession with the fact that Leonardo DiCaprio has yet to win an Oscar. You can immediately find witty memes and commentary from people throughout the country and perhaps all over the world giving their input and poking fun at the significant amount of years in which DiCaprio has been nominated, but has never won. Another perfect example of replay Web is the social app called “Vine”. Vine has been around for almost a year and a half now and is still keeping up with the success amount that Instagram and Twitter has kept.  Within the Vine app users are able to record short six second looping videos onto their Vine account and connect their account with any other social network sites in order to allow more people to see it. Vine allows users to share any skits they have created, tricks, or anything else that comes to mind at any given moment with other people.  These social networks have been vital to the installment and creation of replay Web in society.  They give ease to being able to access prior events whether its social, political, personal, and etc.

Wortham continues to explaining how this phenomenon defines the direction in which society is headed in regards to digital media.  She says that our obsession with staying up to date with social media.  As a college student, it is extremely apparent to me that we are all glued to our cell phones and laptops.  The majority of students keep up to date with blogs, social media, and digital prints of magazines/newspapers in order to keep our daily lives moving along while still being in touch with whats going on and what everyone thinks about the big event that happened.  Many people enjoy reading op-ed pieces written by others and being able to agree or disagree with them through comments.  As Wortham stated in her article, “Perhaps the replay Web, by allowing us to constantly revisit and reconsider the recent past, can help us find new meaning in it. While we change its contours with new interpretations, visual signatures and instant analysis, there is always a new present to step into” by commenting and sharing our thoughts and ideas about virtually everything through the web we are constantly creating new ideas or adding onto already existing ideas.

In conclusion, it is really clear that replay Web is an interesting phenomenon that is utilized by people in order to spread their ideas and opinions with others about social, political, and worldwide events.

This article provides insight from a professional blogger. It’s a general how-to article with real life examples and personal opinions from someone who has already been successful at blogging. He explains how he personally became popular and successful and then goes on to offer tips and suggestions. This article is useful because it pays particular attention to the social aspect of blogging- the importance of viewers and the importance of establishing a community with other bloggers.

– The ability to communicate with the blogger through comments on their blog posts were actually pretty difficult. It may have been a browser incapability issue, but most of the class was unable to comment on the blog successfully.

– Categories would be a great addition to the blog. They would make browsing and identifying particular topics much easier.

– The layout was very textual based and so was a little mundane. Perhaps some more pictures?

– A textual preview of the blog would be helpful for the readers. Right now the set up is so the reader is given a title and requires to click more to access the whole blog. A little preview of the blog would give a hint to how the writer could go about writer.

– A trending blog that has received the most views and or votes would be nice to view at the outset.

– The same could be applied to bloggers, it would be nice to see top bloggers in order to see which blogger garnered the most views and votes.

– A more intriguing title that is more specific to the variety of posts

– It would also be great for better interaction between bloggers and readers if reader were able to make usernames through e-mail addresses. This would also give them the option to possibly be subscribed to the blog and be alerted to new posts.

This article analyzes the functions of a blog and its positive/negative effects in the world of public relations.  It also analyzes how PR firms can utilize blogs in order to help their company grow and expand. It gives me useful information and helpful quotes to back up my thesis.  Also, since it is a well analyzed paper that means it will assist to the credibility of my thesis.  I will use this article in order to further explain how blogs assist PR firms in expanding their follower base and creating a better image for themselves and for their clients

 

What Can We Learn From Lauren Dicioccio’s Paintings?

Lauren Dicioccio’s paintings help us in our process of creating blogs by displaying possible blog layouts through her visual representation of bodies of text. Due to a lack of words, viewers of her paintings are forced to analyze her representation of text rather than any text itself. And in her representation of the text, she beautifully creates appealing displays through vibrant colors and different formats. The ambiguous and assumed text is represented through circular and multicolored dots. The dots are then organized in careful manners to create columns and rows. Different shaped dots also represent different areas of possible text. For example, for a representation of a title she may have large colored dots and while the body of the text are all the same smaller colored dots that are neatly arranged in columns. Then the columns may break for one row of medium colored dots, in order to highlight a possible important line that would literally be the center of attention. Through these mannerisms, she is able to create magnificent displays of possible bodies of text that can help us when creating web and blog layouts, in our efforts to create visually appealing pages.

Lauren Dicioccio’s paintings also put some light on another aspect of blogging. A simple layout can determine whether a reader is interested or disinterested from the start. Just the first glance can determine whether the reader is on an optimistic foot or a pessimistic mood. This first impression is important because it plays a role in the tone that your blog is trying to play. A very visually appealing layout can interest someone’s attention regardless of the content. We can see this through Lauren Dicioccio’s paintings because people are dwelling on the beauty of the simple layout, even though there is an absence of textual work and content. To further strengthen our blog’s messages, we can improve the layouts in more appealing manners to strengthen our blog’s tones. For example, if we compare Lauren Dicioccio’s depicted layouts to one that would represent a boring article online or in a newspaper we could see the impact that a layout can have. Before we even begin reading, Lauren Diociocci’s depicted text looks like a possible easy and fun read while the boring newspaper or article looks as though it is an extremely difficult, boring, and an arduous task that is almost a chore to read. When creating our blogs, our intentions are far from creating chores for our readers and that is when Lauren Dicioccio’s paintings come in to play. From Lauren Dicioccio’s paintings we can learn to create layouts that would encourage people to read our works. Following the patterns of her layouts will also extenuate the tones of our blogs by setting up a good first impression for the reader through his or her first glance, rather than creating boring impressions. We can also utilize Lauren Dicioccio’s usage of different fonts, columns, and rows in order to manipulate certain messages in our blogs to be emphasized more than others. Overall, Lauren Dicioccio’s paintings provide great road maps for possible layouts for our blogs.
