Introduce Yourself

Mahd Nishtar

Hi everyone I’m Mahd Nishtar and my first name is pronounced Mahad, which means, the guided one (I still don’t know exactly what this means).

Why am I so interested in names? Well I was raised in a culture where names have power. Perhaps that’s too dramatic; nonetheless, names have a way of shaping identities. For example, my father is named after Omar, a very influential Muslim caliph known for his bravery, fairness, and stubbornness. My dad embodies such qualities to a fault. He was brave enough to leave everything behind in Pakistan when moving to the U.S. with his family ten years ago. He has done a remarkable job of raising his three sons with a stern but fair hand. And he can be frustratingly stubborn once his mind is made. My mom’s name is Shazia, the Persian word for unique and beautiful. Unfortunately, there isn’t enough room on this page to describe all the qualities that define my mom. Basically, I couldn’t imagine a world without her.

Nishtar

As you can probably tell, I’m a very family-oriented individual unashamed to express his admiration for his parents. Besides enjoying time with family, I have a bunch of hobbies that leave me time for friends and myself. For instance, I enjoy reading, creative writing, and playing the Irish harmonica.

Right now, I’ve set aside everything in preparation for the MCAT, the ultimate medical school admissions test. The only reason I’m taking 9 credits this semester is so I have enough time to pretty much study all the time (except during class of course). Otherwise, as a senior graduating this May, I would have loved to take a few philosophy and psychology classes, somewhat related to my Biology major and Economics minor.

Anyway, I look forward to blogging away with you guys this semester!

“I’m a boss” – Rick Ross

Hey everybody my name is Pat Rossettie.

I am from Bridgewater, New Jersey. I am currently a junior at the Rutgers Business School. I am double majoring in Accounting and Business Management. I’m involved at Rutgers with my fraternity, Phi Psi, and I do a lot of volunteer work with them such as Dance Marathon, Relay for Life, etc. I come from a family of five and I used to live in upstate New York when I was younger. When I usually go to Ecuador every two years to visit my mom’s family since she is from there or I go to Florida for a week  with my family. I like traveling and I want to go to Europe after when I graduate because it would be really neat to see all the sights. Ironically most of my family is either pharmacists, doctors or lawyers but no one is an accountant. So I guess I’ll be the first one in my family to be one which is pretty cool. I really want to work for one of the Big Four Accounting Firms when I graduate such as KPMG, Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers or even Ernst and Young. I had an uncle who was one of the youngest people to make partner at Ernst and Young, so I think it would be cool to work there for a while. I eventually want to open up my own practice or just work at corporate position in a company such as Johnson & Johnson or even General Electric.

I just picked this class just because I need extra credits to make it to 150 credits. The reason I need 150 credits is because in order to take the CPA exam I have to have 150 credits. What I expect to get out of this class is still up in the air. I have never blogged at all in my life; so I am really new to this stuff. I am debating on what to blog and I really like sports so I’m probably going to blog about that for the rest of the semester. I’m a huge fan of New York teams as well such as the Yankees, Giants, and Knicks. I like watching sports games live and I usually go to Yankee Stadium to watch the Yankees play when I am not working. I don’t really follow hockey at all so I will not be blogging about that. I watch ESPN when I have some downtime so when I blog throughout the semester, I guess I will just base my opinion on whether a team I like is doing something stupid or they are making solid moves in their respective sports markets.

Sabrina Lui

Hi, my name is Sabrina Lui. I am from Long Island, New York, which everyone always confuses with Staten Island and sometimes even Rhode Island…

smh

Found on troll.me

Anyway…I am a senior, majoring in Political Science and History, as well as, minoring in English. Even though I am a senior, I won’t be gradating until next semester, hopefully. After I graduate, I’d like to potentially attend law school or find a job, whichever comes first really. Although, I’d prefer to find a job first, as the idea of law school scares the ish out of me.

Other random things about me:

  • I do not have my drivers’ license
  • I’m really OCD about numbers and colors
  • I like to snowboard
  • I have a really loud sneeze (sorry in advance for anybody I scare during allergy season…)
  • I am an only child
  • I love to shop
  • I like to play with makeup
  • If I could spend my life traveling, I would

I originally came across this class when my cousin and I were trying to find interesting classes for him to take this semester. When we found this one, I just decided to take it with him. It interested me because, for one, it is listed under Creative Writing, which I have always enjoyed and also, I have been interested in starting a blog for a while now but just never found the time to actually start. I really enjoy playing with makeup, as previously mentioned, so I’d like to start a blog which features tutorials, reviews, and other beauty related content.

Some of the products I’d like to review will be from beauty boxes I subscribe to. These beauty boxes are subscriptions in that they are like magazines, they come once a month and have unique products to try each time. Each box comes with about 5 sample products. My favorite subscription is Birchbox for only $10 a month. Another beauty subscription I subscribe to is Ipsy. Ipsy’s also good because they host an event in Los Angeles every year, where you have the opportunity to learn from famous beauty bloggers and YouTubers such as Michelle Phan and Promise Phan.

Eventually, I’d like to start a YouTube channel to post tutorials, reviews, and whatnot on but I’m a bit video shy, so I figured blogging would be the first place to start. I’m excited to learn new things about creating and maintaining a blog in this class.

Emma S.D.

My name is Emma Dingle. Hey 🙂 I hate my last name so please do not use it at all. I’m 20, about to be 21 on March 23rd. I am from Burlington County and I live in Westampton. I transferred to Rutgers this fall from my community college. I am a junior and I expect to graduate in the spring of 2015. I live on-campus but I go home frequently where I live with my mom, my sister, and a dog named Rose (which is the dumbest name ever but my sister was 7 at the time so…) or with my dad.

I am an English major; I want to write novels. I am also thinking of minoring in Cinema Studies so that I can learn about screenwriting as well because movies/tv seems interesting. I tend to be very opinionated and I would also like to write critiques of movies, TV shows, music, books, etc. I would like to start a blog eventually exploring this but I am not sure about the angle or what aspect I want to focus on just yet.

This is why I am interested in blogging and I would like to learn more about it. I think blogging is very useful today-almost necessary-because of the way we get our information; it’s always changing and the world is much more fast-paced. In addition to this, books are still selling but a lot of people get their news and share information online. To keep up, I want to know how to blog at least somewhat adequately.

I really love music, movies, books and TV and the way they are all involved with each other. I wanted to be the person who picked soundtracks for films when I was younger, back when I thought that was actually a separate job. I like all types of music; alternative rock, punk rock, pop, hip hop, bollywood, etc etc. I do not really care for R&B or country, however. I love Of Monsters and Men, Coldplay, Passion Pit, Metric, Drake, Arctic Monkeys, Fleetwood Mac, Death Cab for Cutie and tons of others lol I could go on for days honestly. I adore P!nk.

My favorite books are the Harry Potter and Hunger Games series and a lot more that I don’t remember the titles to, unfortunately. When I was younger, I read constantly and blew through everything so fast, I hardly remember anything I didn’t read more than once. My favorite TV shows are Once Upon a Time, Teen Wolf, Parenthood, American Horror Story: Coven (and only coven because Murder House was terrifying.) I can’t really pick my favorite movies because I have so many. I separate them into categories: favorite Disney, favorite comedy, favorite drama, action, romance, romantic comedy, etc. A few movies that stick out are Pirates of the Caribbean, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Lilo & Stitch, Tangled, Scott Pilgrim, What Happens in Vegas, Pineapple Express and much more that I can’t remember at the moment. I HATE scary movies because I have way too much empathy and end up placing myself and my friends in the people’s positions and it’s just all around a terrible experience.

When I was younger, I wanted to be a lot of things. I wanted to be a spy, I wanted to be a soccer player (I played defense for 3-4 years) I wanted to be a biologist ( only so I could study wolves which are my favorite animals) and I wanted to be something like Indiana Jones. I also wanted to be a pirate. So I decided to take the next best step and become a writer. I am literally always daydreaming so I felt like it was the logical choice.

Thanks for reading! Nice to meet you. 🙂

Introduction: Roxy

Hi, my name is Roxy Harrison. I am a senior here at Rutgers and am equal parts lamenting and celebrating my last semester. I am an English major, and in the throes of finishing my Women and Gender Studies minor along with a Spanish minor. I am also drowning in the anxiety-ridden waters of serious procrastination in regards to applying to grad school. Maybe if I pretend May isn’t coming, then it won’t right? Logic.

My house got rocked last year from Hurricane Sandy, so a lot of my push-back from growing up and submitting applications is a serious aversion to leaving home again. Coming back to find all of my beloved books and journals stewing in a delicious little swamp of bay water and mud was enough to make me cry on the spot. However, there’s something really therapeutic about having to start over. My life isn’t made up of things but rather memories and moments. I try to stockpile those when I remember the twenty-seven pairs of shoes I had to throw out of my closet because I’m pretty sure they were going to sprout seaweed.

My favorite tree

My favorite tree

None the less, it could have been worse and so I have to make serious moves to make this happen for me by next fall. I am completely obsessed with my dog, unfortunately named Puff, and we have my mother to thank for that. This is him being tortured by my nine year old sister and eleven year old brother. And yes, he is absolutely as ferocious as he looks for the record.

IMG_0642

I’m an avid beach-goer, as if you couldn’t guess by the chaos of my partially destroyed house, and live in a small coastal town that doesn’t even have its own zip code. We share with the neighboring town. My obsession on top of all obsessions is writing, I picked up a pen when I was about fourteen and I never put it down. My aim for the end of this semester is to finish my Creative Writing certification and maybe just maybe finish the stack of novels I have waiting for me in order to take the English Praxis

I’m currently working at this little trendy bracelet store in Red Bank, New Jersey called Alex and Ani. To say it’s gained a bit of a cult following is putting it mildly. I spent my winter break elbowing past middle-aged women and teenagers desperate to get their hands on bangles. We had bouncers for the forty-minute wait it took to actually even get inside the store…well that’s just another nightmare I don’t want to delve back into.

Needless to say, I doubt there was a single woman in the Monmouth County area who didn’t get their hands on a recycled brass bracelet for the holidays. Despite my retail trauma I managed to make it out relatively unscathed from the 2013 holiday season debacle. And this was entirely in spite of the belligerent forty-year old moms who couldn’t understand why we would be sold out of the December birthstone two days before Christmas. It’s definitely not for the weak-hearted.

This is a pie slice of my life. Finish my undergrad, transition to start my post-grad, work part-time in the girliest place imaginable. Add whipped cream, juggle my boyfriend, best friends, parents, workload. Drop my fork on the floor because I can’t even handle all of that and bypass nuking it in the microwave because let’s be real. I don’t have the time or the patience. Serve cold, for sure, and enjoy.

Introduction

Hi everyone, my name is Angelina Santore and I am a senior at Rutgers University. I live in Long Hill, NJ and I attended Watchung Hills Regional High school. I have four sisters and one brother. I also have five nieces and nephews so I come from a pretty big family. My family is in the fireworks business and our company is called Garden State Fireworks located in Millington, NJ. Growing up with a fireworks factory behind my house is probably not normal for most people, but for my siblings and I it is pretty much all we know. It is definitely a very stressful business to be in and our busy season is obviously the summer.

When I first started college I attended Seton Hall University. I transferred to Rutgers when my twin sister and I realized that it was too difficult for us to be apart at different schools. I just started commuting this semester after previously living on campus the past few years so I’m still adjusting to this change.  I was previously a member of Greek life here at Rutgers. Although I  recently realized it wasn’t for me, I was able to make a lot of friends from Greek life considering I was a transfer student. I am also a current member of the Rutgers University figure skating club. The club was just founded last year so it is not very well known at Rutgers. Before going to college I represented Team USA for synchronized figure skating which was a really awesome experience. I had the opportunity to travel to Croatia and Italy to compete with my team. Most people have never heard of synchronized figure skating, but if you were to see it you would question why it still is not in the Olympics. I am still very excited to watch the 2014 Olympics that are starting very soon. All of my other siblings growing up played ice hockey so we definitely enjoy the winter games.

Outside of school I am a sales associate at a women’s clothing store called the LOFT in Bridgewater, NJ. I enjoy going to work very much and helping customers find the perfect look for an occasion. I’m still unsure of the career I want to pursue after graduation, but I just accepted an internship for Summer 2014. I will be going to Los Angeles, CA to intern with Bridal Bar wedding planning. Since I was little I have always been extremely passionate about weddings and planning events. I’m so excited for this opportunity especially because I have never been to California before. Although I am very excited it will also be extremely hard for me not to be home with my family during our busy season of the business.

Another thing I enjoy is going to concerts and listening to music. My two favorite bands are Third Eye Blind and the Zac Brown Band, which is kind of weird because they are opposite. I also love the beach and warm weather.

Introduction: Kim

Hey everyone! My name is Kim. I am currently a sophomore working towards a nursing degree.  I am not a very experienced blogger, only making one blog my whole life with about 10 posts. I work part- time in a grocery store called Wegmans; therefore if I were to make blogs I would like to write about trying new healthy foods.  I am always keeping an eye out on popular new products customers are purchasing.

Here’s a link to a blog I started in the past and wish to continue to work on:

http://kimmysfoodblog.wordpress.com/

From this class, I wish to learn more about how to make a blog look professional.  I only know the very basics about blogging, such as making a post, adding a video, and adding a picture.  In addition, I want to learn about all the features wordpress has to offer for making a blog.  As a nursing major, I do not get many chances to take a class that allows me to demonstrate my creative side and talk about subjects not related to science or nursing, but is still important to me.  I believe that reading blogs is a great way to keep up-to-date or see a different perspective on various subjects including, politics, movies, restaurants, etc.  Furthermore, I noticed that blogs are not like a formal essay or research article.  Blogging allows more freedom of expression.  A blogger can definitely develop a unique voice on a certain topic.

Another fact about me is that I am a commuter.  I take the train to school every day and I do not mind.  The train is a great place to study and less stressful than driving.  Rush hour in the New Brunswick can be a nightmare!

Some hobbies I enjoy include reading a suspenseful novel and watching various TV shows/movies on Netflix.  I am a big fan of Game of thrones and An American Horror Story.  Some of my all time favorite movies include Forrest Gump, Gladiator, and Saving Private Ryan.

I do not spend all my time on the computer or being a book worm as what my parents think. I am actually quite an active person as well.  Growing up, I played a lot of tennis with my family. In high school, I even played on the girls varsity tennis team.  Furthermore, I like to rollerblade in the streets, even though people think it’s a very 90’s thing to do.

In addition, I do not travel much. Actually, I have never been out of the country.  When I do have a chance, I would like to visit Hong Kong and Australia.  However, I have lived in other states.  I lived in Rhode Island and Ohio.  Out of the three states I’ve lived in so far, I enjoy New Jersey the best because it’s close to two big cities.  In addition, there are plenty of nice beaches here. In Ohio, there was just a gigantic lake… haha

Also, I am a big animal lover. I took riding lessons when I was younger and rode on a pony named peanut. Peanut was  afraid of rocks and one time, she walked off the trail path  because it was covered with pebbles and I got a face full of branches!  One of my dreams is to eventually own a dog, preferably a border collie. I can look at puppy videos on youtube all day.

A little about Mike!

Hello!!! My name is Michael Manfredo and I’m a 31 year old transfer student here at Rutgers. I know I’m a little older than your average student, but I’m excited to be back at it. I’ve spent the last decade travelling and enjoying as much of my early years as I could. I’ve lived in 12 states, had a variety of different jobs and loved every minute of my somewhat nomadic lifestyle.

A few of the more exciting things I’ve done:

  1. Aviation Electrician in the United States Navy.
  2. Production Assistant on the show Criminal Minds.
  3. Hiked a large chunk of the Appalachian Trail.
One of the many planes I spent my days with!

One of the many planes I spent my days with!

Having been in bootcamp on Sept. 11th 2001, my life took an incredible turn and presented me with an opportunity to do things for my country I’d never thought possible. As a crew member of VFA-151, I spent countless hours on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Constellation making repairs to F-18 C+D Night Attack Fighter Jets. To some, this might sound exciting, and indeed it often was, however, 20+ hour days in 100 degree heat, off the coast of a foreign country takes it’s toll, and I decided against reenlistment. Being a mere months after 9/11, I was not afforded a lot of the opportunities that people recieve in the military now. The travel was limited, the enjoyable aspects rarely existed, and the stress was at a maximum. I’m appreciative of everything the military did for me, but I’m grateful to have moved on with my life.

On a whim, in 2008, I packed up all my belongings and set out for Los Angeles to pursue a career in film and television. After spending a few weeks in my car, I found a place to live and found my way onto the set of Criminal Minds. It was an opportunity that few are afforded and one that I will always cherish. I met so many amazing people, famous and otherwise.

I have many interests and hobbies that I have picked up over the years. I consider myself a writer, a director and an editor. My original goals were to write and direct my own films, but I have since found that I enjoy the writing process as much if not more than the directrial aspects and have since decided to pursue this. I’m half way through my first novel and a quarter of the way through a book of short stories that are loosely based on past experiences of mine. While I’ve written over a hundred short stories and recieved a decent amount of praise for my “talent”, I lack the appreciation for my own work that others seem to have. It’s something I’ve been working on though and I plan to push for publication of some of my work in the coming year.

I decided to take this class because blogging has always been an interest of mine. However, I tend to get a little overwhelmed when it comes to actually getting started and picking an overall theme to model a blog after. I hope to gain some sense of direction and understanding from this class so I can find another creative outlet to express the many views and thoughts I’ve built up in my years of travel and excitement.

One of my favorite quotes, unfortunately from a film, but powerful none-the-less. From Midnight in Paris:

“I believe that love that is true and real, creates a respite from death. All cowardice comes from not loving or not loving well, which is the same thing. And then the man who is brave and true looks death squarely in the face, like some rhino-hunters I know or Belmonte, who is truly brave… It is because they make love with sufficient passion, to push death out of their minds… until it returns, as it does, to all men… and then you must make really good love again.”

About Me

Hello there

Hello there

Hello, my name is Nicole Vacca. I am a senior and I am majoring in English. I am also double minoring in Digital Communication Information Media Studies and Psychology. For the past two years I have been interning at a Recruitment Advertising company in NYC called TMP Worldwide. I am the marketing intern there. I enjoy working in the city, but I hate commuting there. My favorite color is purple and my favorite food is sushi. In my spare time, I enjoy playing soccer and spending time with my family. I have played soccer since I was in the third grade and I love playing defensive positions. I also love spending time with my family. I am the oldest of four sisters. My sisters and I do a lot together. Our favorite thing to do together as sisters is listen to One Direction. My younger sisters love One Direction more than I do, but its a fun way to spend time together. Also, every Sunday my dad cooks a traditional italian meal for our family. This is some time we set aside for us all to be together. We fill each other in on our week over some good food. When I am not spending time with my family, I spend time with my friends. My friends and I usually like to see a movie or go to the mall together. Speaking of movies, my favorites are The Godfather, Back to the Future and She’s the Man. I like the Godfather because there is a lot of action and drama. Back to the Future is one of my favorites because I like how the movie puts a comedic spin on going back in time. She’s the Man was my all time favorite movie when I was a teenager. I saw it three times in theaters. I still enjoy this movie today because it contains a focus on soccer and again involves comedy. Amanda Bynes is pretty hysterical in She’s the Man. My favorite book is Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. I am a romantic so from the start I like that the book has a romantic focus. It centers on two sisters finding love and marriage and the struggles they go through to find those things. It is not just about romance but also about the relationship between sisters. I enjoy that aspect of the book because it allows me to personally relate to it, seeing as I have three younger sisters. Aside from that,  I am also a commuter this year. During my first three years at Rutgers I lived on campus. This year, to save some money, I am commuting to school because I only live twenty minutes away from the university. At the end of this school year my goals are to graduate and find a job I love. My dream job is to write for a magazine some day. I also would like to live in NYC some day so I do not have to commute an hour and a half there and back five days a week.

A Whole New World: Sneaker Culture

Hi everyone,

My names Jian Guo, but you can call me Jay. I am a Communication major and a entrepreneurship minor. I am Chinese, and I have over forty pairs of sneakers.

bred1

I use to collect them but it is a very expensive hobby so I stopped. One of my favorite pairs of sneakers are the Air Jordan 1 in the black and red color way. The simplicity of the design and the history behind this pair makes it iconic. This was the first pair in the jordan line. Now a days, this pair is highly sought after, retailing at $170 at your local sports wear stores and selling out within minutes and it is no surprise that people will line up for the newest jordan releases for days. Also things like robbery, and shootings are of no surprise either. The recently released Gamma blue 11s, added another story to the horrors but not uncommon culture of the “sneakerheads”

http://newsone.com/2815944/nike-air-jordan-store-fights/

supremestore

Furthermore, this desire and thirst attract the business minded individuals to the scene. For some this becomes a cash cow; with sneakers retailing at $170 and selling at twice the price or three times the price people have made fortunes.  In a post from the newyorker, describes the success of this business from the culture. In an underground store in NYC Chinatown, which I’ve been to, selling sneakers and street wear brands, Peter, has made well over 7 figures, just buying and reselling.

The culture breeds this sort of crazy, insane, and totally wacked out behavior but at the same time this culture also brings people together. For those who have nothing to do on a friday night sneaker campouts are another way for them to hangout with friends or make new friends. People connect through some sort of odd emotional experience by standing in line for a whole week through rain or snow. They share this kind of hardship and at the end of the journey they become friends, or the guy who fights you for the last pair. All in all, the sneaker culture is an enjoyable hobby if one can afford it.

As for this course, I took it to further my knowledge on blogging in order to create better content and to have a proper voice on blogs. With technology and social media on the rise, having a proper voice online is crucial in gaining more exposure and more audiences. In doing so I hope to gain a voice that is well known and liked. I want my voice online to have meaning and an impact behind them.
